SUMMARY:Jesus's Mission and Ours
DESCRIPTION:“Jesus’s Mission and Ours” is the theme of a series of conversations that will take place each Sunday from January 10 through February 14\, 11:00 a.m. to noon\, featuring John Cobb. The series is being sponsored and hosted by John’s church community\, Claremont United Methodist Church. Each conversation will focus on a portion of his most recent book\, Salvation\, and will be facilitated by Ron Hines. \n\n\n\nTOPIC FOR FEBRUARY 14th: What Is Our Church Saving? \n\n\n\nJesus announced the basileia theou (divine commonwealth) in his mission to save his people from Rome and from their own proclivity to violence. To follow Jesus today is to adopt the most inclusive mission in our day—“to save the world from the self-destruction on which it now seems bent.” John is frank about the dilemmas in freeing American self-understanding from its “Christianism” and “modern” metaphysics. He likens Jesus’s mission to today’s invitation to an “ecological civilization\,” which is called for in the constitution of China\, and he celebrates the emergence of “communities of communities” and “ecological economics.” The book summarizes a lifetime of reflection by this eminent scholar in our midst\, and gives insight into his current popularity in China. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPurchase the book using the link here\, and the Cobb Institute will receive a small percentage of the revenue. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRSVP to receive Zoom Information

SUMMARY:John Cobb & Friends Gathering - Christina Hutchins
DESCRIPTION:Presenter(s): Christina Hutchins \n\n\n\nTopic: Beyond Loss\, the Beauty of Life Unfolding \n\n\n\nIn her podcast interview with Jay McDaniel\, poet/pastor/theologian Christina Hutchins said she was drawn to Whitehead because he deals with “perishing in the midst of becoming.” He takes loss seriously. Hutchins identified Holy Week as one of her favorite parts of the Christian calendar. Beyond the reality of loss is also the reaching out of Jesus from the place of suffering. Life is affirmed in congregation. Adventures of ideas never cease to be life-changing\, with more beauty and love to unfold. Her sharing of poetry will remind us that life matters! Trust yourself to it as a swimmer trusts in water! \n\n\n\nFind more about Christina Hutchins—poet\, process philosopher/theologian\, teacher/workshop leader\, speaker/retreat facilitator—at her website. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInformation about how to access the gathering are made available via email. SUMMARY:John Cobb & Friends Gathering - Tim Eastman
DESCRIPTION:Presenter(s): Tim Eastman \n\n\n\nTopic: Untying the Gordian Knot: Process\, Reality\, and Context \n\n\n\nMatt Segall\, chairman of the Cobb Institute’s Science Advisory Committee\, will engage NASA plasma physicist Tim Eastman in conversation about his book\, published in December\, 2020. Eastman uses the Logoi framework—which is radically inclusive and incorporates both actuality and potentiality—to go beyond standard ways of knowing—that of context independence (science) and context focus (arts\, humanities)—to demonstrate the inevitable role of ultimate context (meaning\, spiritual dimension) as part of a transformative ecological vision.
