Course Description
American culture is fragmented. We are disconnected from each other, from ourselves, and even from the very earth that gives us life. We see it in our politics, in our race relations, in the state of our environment, and in our epidemic levels of loneliness and alienation. Dr. Sheri D. Kling believes that we will solve none of the problems that face us until we transform our relationship with embodied life and rediscover within it what is sacred through transformative lived experiences of wholeness.
To get there, we will explore the integrating works of Alfred North Whitehead and Carl Gustav Jung through the work that Dr. Kling examined in her book A Process Spirituality: Christian and Transreligious Resources for Transformation. When we weave the ideas of these two thinkers together, we see that reality at both the level of the cosmos and the level of the psyche is intrinsically whole-making and characterized by value, relationality, and transformation. In this course we will explore the ways in which Whitehead and Jung show us a reality in which we matter, we belong, and we can experience positive change.
“Life has always seemed to me like a plant that lives on its rhizome. Its true life is invisible, hidden in the rhizome. The part that appears above ground lasts only a single summer. Then it withers away – an ephemeral apparition. When we think of the unending growth and decay of life and civilizations, we cannot escape the impression of absolute nullity. Yet I have never lost a sense of something that lives and endures underneath the eternal flux. What we see is the blossom, which passes. The rhizome remains.”
