A Discussion of John Cobb’s new book, “Salvation”

The calling of a Christian, says John Cobb, is not to imitate the beliefs of Jesus but rather to share in his faith: to be open to a loving God in our way and our time as he was in his way and his time. And it is to his hope, along with him, that a truly beloved society can emerge in which love, not violence, is the norm. For Jesus the challenge to this hope was Rome; for Christians today the challenge is Modernity. If we are Christian, can we save ourselves from ourselves, so that this kind of world can emerge? John Cobb’s answer in Salvation: Jesus’ Mission and Ours is “yes, maybe.” It depends on whether communities of Christians – local churches – can roll up their sleeves and help hope become a reality. Join Rev. Dr. Jen Strickland and Rev. Dr. Jacob Buchholz of the Claremont United Church of Christ (Claremont, CA), along with Dr. Jay McDaniel and the author himself, Dr. John Cobb, for an introduction to the book and a discussion of this possibility.
