Just a quick point of reference. A word search of “God” in my Kindle version of Process and Reality produced a listing of 283 passages in the text. I believe the functionality of this “God” (providing order, an initial aim, and unity) is deeply imbedded in Whitehead’s metaphysical model and since Whitehead is considered the father of process thought it is inevitable that we will need to come to terms with this fact. As pointed out by Tom Gates, the word “God” is heavily burdened with biblical baggage and perhaps it would have been better if Whitehead had coined another term for this entity as he had for many other concepts; yet Whitehead’s concept of “God” is radically different from that of the tribal, theistic, biblical “God”. I personally like Jay McDaniel’s term “Soul of the Universe” which emphasizes the relationality of all things.
