Announcement: Week 2 Update

October 17, 2019

Dear Learning Lab Participants,

It was great to begin getting to know a lot of you last week, and I just wanted to give you an update on a few things. First, unfortunately we didn’t include/involve the online participants as much as we should have last Saturday. Several of them introduced themselves and shared comments, and it would have been good to relay those to the rest of the class. We definitely want the online participants to feel part of the group and be involved, so from now on we’re going to try our best make sure what they have to say will be relayed to everyone else and responded to if necessary. This means that, at the beginning of this week’s class, I’m going to read the introductions that were shared last week in the live chat, as well as those that I’ve received by email. And any future comments/questions will be read out loud as soon as possible after they’re posted.

Second, as I mentioned at the beginning of last week’s class session, in order to post in the live chat during the livestream, you need to have a Google account and be logged in. However, since some of you either don’t have a Google account or don’t want one, I’d like to provide an alternative way to submit comments or questions online during the livestream. So, what I’ve done is enable the comment functionality on the course lesson pages. The course lesson pages are the ones that are listed under “Course Content” on the main course page (i.e., the ones that contain the link to the livestream for each week’s class session). If you look at the bottom of each lesson page, you’ll see a comment window that you can use anytime, but anything that’s posted there during the live session will be shared with the rest of the class. So, you now have three options: (1) the live chat window, (2) the comment window on the lesson pages, or (3) send me an email.

Third, just a quick reminder to the students in the classroom that the online students aren’t able to hear your question or comment if you aren’t speaking into the microphone, so please make sure that you have the mic in hand before you begin speaking.

Fourth, I’ve added an “Announcements” section near the top of the course page. So whenever I send out messages like this to the entire class, they will also be posted there.

If there any other behind-the-scenes matters that you need help with (e.g., issues with the livestream, difficulties logging in, etc.), please don’t hesitate to let me know. See you on Saturday!
