Course Summary
This four-session course proposes that constructive work grounded in process theology can provide support during the adventure of the launching young adults. Together we will explore an understanding of God that can aid those who are navigating this challenging time.
Course Description
The challenges of launching young adults are intense. The intensity can often be anxiety-filled and equally adrenaline-infused. Our awareness is on high alert and our responsiveness can be overly anxious. Families and young adults can worry they are caught up in what has been termed “failure to launch” as they approach the next stage of life together. This course proposes that constructive work grounded in process theology can support us during the adventure of the launch. This four-session course will revisit the traditional characteristics of God. The hope is that the assessment of our concepts of God can support adults who are launching young adults.
Course Outline
Session 1, Time Out and Time In: Expectations and Power: In this session, we’ll use the childhood disciplinary tool of “time out” to think about ways of relating throughout the launch. Timing in and out of our efforts can greatly assist our relationships and allow for assessment and retooling of a restorative power.
Session 2, Do You See What I See?: Perception and Creativity: This session will provide theological substantiation for the “framing” that can be most helpful in launching. Examining creativity in process thought can allow the launch to expand from our focus on our young adult to the adventure of what it means to be a human being. Creativity here will be informed by Family Systems thinking.
Session 3, Questions and Discovery: Essentials of Becoming: This session is merely a reminder session of the reality of process itself. This will feel and is very much common sense. There will be a celebration here for participants of all they have known and accurate hunches along the way. Much like anything that we attend to, a loving attention to process and possibility is essential for the launching relationship.
Session 4, Checking Self: Fallacies that Need Follow Up: In this final session will revisit the concept of launch. We’ll look again at the human condition, power, becoming and mortality. Some of our best decisions are pursued with these concepts in mind. Ample time will be given for conversation and discussion in each section and particularly in this last session.
